155 days left to JAVA JAZZ 2009

155 days left from today since Java Jazz Festival was prepared, the event will be held on March 6,7,8 March 2009. This is the biggest Jazz Festival which is already yearly program organizer. The event also supported by Bona fit company and fully supported by Indonesia Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Music, particularly JAZZ, has been – and continues to be- a very important part of my life. By establishing a vibrant new cultural image of the capital as a centre for Indonesia's vastly diverse music and culture, including jazz, I am committed to ensuring jazz continues to have a prominent voice in Jakarta and across Indonesia.

Though the festival in its present form was born of a dream, it now lives on as a reality - a flagship event in Indonesia and one of the biggest festivals in the world. As we open the door once again to the richness of local arts and culture, we offer a very special thanks to a wonderful group of people and companies. At every level of its operations, the festival relies on supporters — not only enthusiastic volunteers but also, of course, corporate sponsors and gracious donors. As we grow in magnitude and stature we can never forget the generosity and community spiritedness of the sponsors who have followed us every step of the way.

But there are other elements at play as well.

Firstly, through our annual festival and associated events, we believe we are playing our part to promote Indonesia.Secondly, from the outset, we saw very clearly that we had a role to play in promoting jazz and the skills of talented jazz musicians - young and old - in Indonesia and around the world. In this way we can also remain committed to the goal of perpetuating jazz as an art form.

If like us you enjoy such fine music, you will agree with England's greatest conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who said, "Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty. Magical music never leaves the memory. And so it is with this year's event. festival-goers were treated to performances by some of the top soul, blues and jazz performers in the world. Kool & The Gang's special sound at the unique intersection of jazz, R&B, funk and pop : R&B singer Carleen Anderson, one of the most talented singers of the last decade : rhythm & blues crooner Eric Benet, guitarist composer Vinny Valentino, local group Maliq & d'essentials with their neo-soul music, Dave Koz and Bob James who are back after so many years apart from their fans in Indonesia, and scores of others . . .

For the jazz aficionado – many of these acts were well known. For the uninitiated – our Festival was once again a great chance to discover the world of jazz in all its forms from the contemporary to the classical. Simply to witness and see the satisfaction and approval shown through the applause and reception by the audiences made me realize that not only had we hit the spot with our unique mix of international and local talents but we had managed to bring pleasure to the young and the not so young - no small feat! Indonesia's top drummer Gilang Ramadhan said that the festival showed that there were still people in the country who cared about jazz music and worked hard to realize their passion. "We are very enthusiastic about the festival. However, I prefer to just be a performer on stage, because I can imagine how difficult it must be to organize a festival of this scale," Gilang said. His wish has came true. This year he took to the stage on the final night.

"We are glad about this festival. We have longed for this kind of festival and finally it materializes in the midst of our country's myriad problems and uncertainty," said piano player Riza Arshad, who, along with his fusion band Simak Dialog once again performed at this year's festival. I also recall former bass player of fusion band Casiopea Tetsuo Sakurai telling the press, “I hope that I can come back to this festival year after year." Yet another wish came true. Tetsuo was back on stage this year. From jazz to blues to funk to R&B, welcome to the sound of Jakarta.

About Billy Sheehan

Billy Sheehan has changed the way bass guitar is played. Rising to cult status in the 80's with his Buffalo, NY based band Talas, Billy was recruited by David Lee Roth when Roth left Van Halen in '85. He recorded two platinum selling albums with the former Van Halen front man before setting out on his own. Forming Mr. Big in 1989, the band achieved a Billboard #1 single in the US and 14 other countries with "To Be With You" from their 2nd Atlantic Records album release "Lean Into It". While developing his trademark style of playing he has performed over 4000 live gigs on every continent except Africa and Antarctica.

Voted the "Best Rock Bass Player" 5 times in Guitar Player magazines Readers Poll, an honor which placed him in their "Gallery of Greats" (alongside Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee and Eddie Van Halen to name but a few), he has also won readers polls in Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy, and many other countries. In Japan, Billy has won the prestigious "Player Magazine" (Japan's #1 Music mag) Readers Poll for Best Bass Player an unprecedented 14 consecutive times and Burrn! Magazines (Japan's #1 heavy metal mag) Readers Poll 5 times while selling out Budokan arena 3 consecutive nights with his band Mr. Big.

He started the new Millennium 2000 by performing before 40,000 fans with Mr. Big at the Osaka Dome in Japan then began work on his long awaited solo album. With recording completed, Billy's first solo album entitled "COMPRESSION" was released on April 25, 2001 on the Favored Nations label.

On "COMPRESSION", Sheehan wrote, sang, played Baritone 12 string and 6 string guitar, played bass and programmed drums on the entire record, except for 2 tracks featuring Terry Bozzio on drums and an amazing Steve Vai solo on the song "Chameleon" (the first pairing of Steve Vai and Billy since the David Lee Roth days). Other upcoming records include a new Mr. Big album (their 6th) slated for release in Fall 2001, an all instrumental bass album, an experimental Bass & Drum record w/ Terry Bozzio, and the 5th Niacin album featuring Dennis Chambers on drums (Funkadelic, Steely Dan, and Mahavishnu Orchestra). 7 Bass Konser di Teater Studio TIM

7 Bass yang terdiri dari Indro Hardjodikoro, Ilyas Muhadji, Barry Likumahuwa, Tendra Leonard, Christian Dharma, dan Adi Darmawan memukau publik pada konser yang diselenggarakan Dewan Kesenian Jakarta 23 Agustus 2008 bertempat di Teater Studio Taman Ismail Marzuki.

Repertoire yang menarik dibawakan secara bersama-sama (7 bassist), Solo, Duo, Trio dibawakan secara bergantian. konser dibuka dengan lagu ‘Thypoon’ yang dibawakan oleh 7 Bassist didukung drummer muda Agung. Kemudian bassist muda berbakat Fajar (siswa Farabi Bogor) secara memukau membawakan 2 buah karyanya yaitu ‘Cloudy Butterfly’ dan ‘Woodpecker’.

Selanjutnya Trio Bass Ilyas-Christian-Tendra membawakan dua buah lagu berturut turut yaitu Tutu (Miles Davis) dan Panther (Marcus Miller). Setelah itu Barry Likumahuwa tampil dengan dukungan Barry Likumahuwa Project membawakan ‘Good Spell’(Barry L) dan ‘Jazz Crimes’ (Joshua Redman).

Secara tak terduga indro Hardjodikoro mengundang Dwiki Dharmawan yang kehadirannya mewakili Komite Musik DKJ untuk tampil duo pada karya Indro ‘Angan’ secara Spontan. Indro kemudian mengundang Adi Darmawan untuk ber ‘duo’ dalam ‘All The Things You Are’.

School Days menjadi lagu pamungkas dibawakan oleh ke 7 bassist bersama drummer Agung. Kemudian mereka didaulat untuk encore dan memainkan lagu Koes Plus ‘kujemu’.

Para audiens menyatakan rasa puas dan kagumnya, karena bisa menikmati ternyata instrumen bass ditangan para bassist piawai ini bisa menjelma menjadi ‘Bass Symphony’. Bass dapat memainkan fungsi Root, Rhythm, melody, improvisasi dan Harmoni. Indro, Adi, Tendra, Ilyas dan Christian adalah Instruktur di Lembaga Pendidikan Musik Farabi. Sedangkan Barry Likumahuwa adalah Bassis muda yang kini sudah menjadi music director yang juga jebolan LPM Farabi. Fajar saat ini masih belajar di Farabi dibawah bimbingan Indro Hardjodikoro.

LIBRA
